What are energy calculations (Energy Calcs) and why do I need them?
Energy calculations, or E-Calcs, are reports required by building departments to show that your project meets local or state energy codes (like Florida Energy Code or IECC). These calculations estimate your home’s energy consumption based on insulation, windows, HVAC, and building orientation. Submitting a compliant E-Calc is often mandatory for permit approval.
What is a Manual J, Manual S, and Manual D?
These are HVAC design reports required by mechanical code:
- Manual J determines the heating and cooling load for your home
- Manual S selects the appropriate HVAC equipment
- Manual D designs the ductwork layout
These reports help ensure that your system is neither oversized nor undersized — improving energy efficiency and comfort.
Do I need a blower door test to close my permit?
Yes, in most jurisdictions. A blower door test measures how airtight your home is, identifying air leaks that reduce energy efficiency. It’s a required field test under the IECC and Florida Building Code for new homes and many remodels.
Can I modify the DIY plans?
Yes, you can modify the DIY plans with the help of your engineer, architect, etc. If you prefer, we can also make small adjustments for a fee, depending on the level of changes. We can also take a DIY design and customize it, including stamping for a particular location, for an additional fee, providing a hybrid approach.
How do I qualify for energy efficiency rebates or tax incentives?
You’ll typically need:
- Verified energy compliance reports (like Manual J or E-Calc)
- Field testing (blower door, duct leakage)
- Certification by a HERS rater or energy professional
