Dome homes

Geodesic domes, engineered to build.

Engineering and design for geodesic dome homes, glamping domes and dome rentals: structure, foundation and code compliance, with sealed drawings for your permit.

Why a dome

Efficient, strong and one of a kind.

  • Energy efficient

Less surface area for the space enclosed means less heat gained in summer and lost in winter.

  • Wind resistant

The curved, triangulated shell spreads load through the whole structure, which helps it shed wind.

  • Open, flexible space

No interior load-bearing walls are needed, so the floor plan is yours to shape.

  • Unforgettable stays

A dome is a destination in itself, which is why they work so well as short-term rentals and glamping sites.

What we do

From concept to construction documents.

Every dome is different. Whether it is a cozy off-grid retreat, a family home or a row of rental domes, we tailor the design to your site and your plans, and stay with you through the permit.

  • Structural engineering

The dome frame or shell, connections, openings and any loft or mezzanine, designed for your site’s wind and snow loads.

  • Foundation design

Ring beam, slab, piers or a raised platform, matched to the soil and the dome’s base reactions.

  • Building code compliance

We check the design against your local building code and answer the plan reviewer’s questions.

  • Construction documents

Signed and sealed drawings and calculations ready for the permit, for a custom dome or a kit.

Questions

Can a dome home be permitted?

Yes. A dome is permitted like any other house: the building department wants sealed structural drawings and calculations, a foundation design and the usual energy and life-safety items. The shape is unusual; the process is not.

Do you engineer dome kits?

Yes. Send the kit manufacturer’s drawings and your site address. We check the shell, connections, openings and foundation for your local wind and snow loads and seal what the permit needs.

Are domes good for short-term rentals?

They can be. Domes stand out in listings, and glamping domes on a platform can be quick to build. Zoning and short-term rental rules vary a lot by county, so check those early; we can help you understand what the building code side requires.
