Why it Matters

A container isn’t a home until an engineer makes it one.

Not sure which one to pick?

Here’s how most of our clients decide.

Start with DIY plans if…

  • You’re building in a jurisdiction that doesn’t require PE-stamped plans, or outside the USA entirely
  • You already have a local engineer, architect, or contractor who will customize and stamp on your behalf
  • You want a proven starting point you can download today and modify later
  • Budget is the primary constraint and you want to get building fast
  • You’re sharing plans with a builder to get accurate quotes before committing to custom engineering

Go with Custom Engineering if…

  • You need permit-ready, PE-sealed drawings accepted by your building department
  • Your site has specific constraints — wind zone, flood zone, steep slope, coastal exposure, seismic
  • You want concierge support from design through permit revisions
  • You’re building a flagship, investment, or high-value project where a licensed Engineer protects everyone involved
  • Your local jurisdiction has flagged your DIY plans and requested engineered drawings
Or combine both: start with a DIY plan set, and upgrade to a customized, PE-stamped package later. Ask us how.

Frequently Asked

Questions, answered.

Pre-engineered plans, custom engineering, permitting, and working with Oasis.

Do you provide construction services or the actual shipping containers?

No. Oasis Engineering specializes in engineering design, consulting, drafting, and PE-sealed drawings for container homes. We do not sell containers or build on-site. As a licensed engineering firm, we also offer inspection and construction verification services.

What is included in the DIY pre-engineered plans?

Our DIY plans are instant-download drawing packages with pre-engineered layouts, structural details, and construction guidance. They do not include personalized consultation, site-specific customization, or a USA PE stamp. DIY plans sell worldwide and are ideal for unpermitted locations or as a starting point for your builder, contractor, or local engineer.

What is included in the custom engineering service?

Custom service includes a consultation, a tailored design, 3D renderings, full permit-ready drawings, and a PE seal. We ensure the design meets local code and your site conditions, and we support revisions during the permitting process.

Can I modify the DIY plans?

Yes. You can modify DIY plans with the help of your own engineer or architect. We can also make small adjustments for a fee, or take a DIY design and fully customize and engineer it for a specific location as a hybrid approach.

How do I know if a container home is allowed at my location?

Always consult your local building authority and a licensed local professional to confirm zoning, setbacks, and code requirements. Our engineering consulting service can also provide guidance specific to your jurisdiction.

How do I start a custom container home project with Oasis Engineering?

Contact us to schedule a consultation. We will review your vision, site conditions, and jurisdictional requirements, then outline the design and engineering steps needed to bring the project to permit and construction.

Do you offer support during the construction phase?

We do not perform physical construction, but we provide consulting and support through design and planning. We can recommend experienced container contractors and we offer inspection verification and engineer letters through our Engineer Letters service.

How long does a custom container home design take?

A custom design typically takes 2-4 weeks with us. Permitting usually takes 15-30 days on average, but can run longer in stricter jurisdictions such as incorporated cities compared to unincorporated county areas.

What are the benefits of building with shipping containers?

Shipping containers offer durability, cost efficiency, and sustainability through reuse. They are structurally strong, adapt to many layouts, and support creative architectural solutions when paired with proper engineering and code-compliant design.

Can I see examples of completed Oasis Engineering container home projects?

Yes. Examples include the 7-container luxury residence designed by Christi Homar Design in Chattanooga, TN, and a 2-story DIY owner-builder project in South Florida documented by InterModal Living. Additional examples are available on our YouTube channel, Etsy shop, and online store, or by contacting us directly.
